Prague Cabaret Journey

In the early 20th century in European capitals, a very popular cabaret genre was gradually, gently and non-continuously looking for its place in a life of culturally and socially eager Prague residents. The cabaret tradition here and then appeared at one of the sites of Prague, gained a certain reputation and renome, only so that it could immediately disappear, and after some time be born again somewhere else. For almost 150 years of Prague Cabaret existence and its formation, a map of isolated and almost always legendary places with the popular cabaret tradition was created and attracted significant personalities of Czech culture. So it is with Kabaret U Fleku.

historieThe year 1863 can be considered a beginning of the history of Prague cabaret when the couplet singers company arrives to Prague from Leipzig. They become an inspiration for local itinerant artists such as actors without engagement or proficient students and create an organized “singing center” with stable Czech-German repertoire (couplets, solo dramatic sketches, duets, etc.), while before these artists functioned more solitary and traveled from town to town with their huckster songs. By the early 90th the 19. century the companies functioned as “non-residents” – ie. they traveled from one pub or brewery to another with their barrow, white-red curtain, old accordion and simple stage of planks. Over time, unchangeable singing halls began to arise – Prague center of such halls became Na Porici street (follow-up to today’s Republic Square).

In 1892, the first Prague’s cafe called At Golden Barrel  originates. The company already has a permanent ensemble, regular evening performances, stable undirected program (couplets, comic costume outputs), each time concluded with a usual one-act plays. Among other famous Prague’s cafes were businesses U Rozvařilů, U Bažantů and U Bucků. Well-traveled owners of restaurants in Prague brought the trendy idea of the restaurant with a music program from Paris, Munich and Vienna. While in Paris cafe chantant were served coffee and cognac in Tingl Tangl (same like in Munich or Vienna) that was mainly beer.

historieIn 1908 in the Czech Republic for the first time the concept of a “cabaret” in connection with the theater program, which took place in the Jubilee Exhibition in Prague Exhibition Grounds. Cabaret at the Jubilee Exhibition was so successful that since then began to appear more intellectual form of Prague Santana – was one of the most famous cabaret Lantern (established in 1910, among its leading members was Karel Hasler and Jaroslav Kvapil), the center of Prague literary cabaret became the company Montmartre Chain in the street (to the regular visitors was active Jaroslav Hasek, Eduard Bass, Max Brod and Franz Kafka) and probably the most famous and most appreciated cabaret pre-war period in the Czech Republic has become a fully professional Red Seven, which was about an enterprising listener Rights George Red and literary active Edward Basse cabaret. This distinctive Prague cabaret scene in his time in the years 1913 to 1922 produced a number of important actors’ personalities (Vlasta Burian, Henry Tilt, Ferenc Futurist and others).

In the twenties of the 20th century, then the word gets Czech avant-garde theater, which is a form of short cabaret scene and musical output close. There is a group such as DaDa about directing personality George Frejka and EF Burian and especially famous creation creative duo Voskovce and Wericha music Jezkoa and directed Honzlova follows the fading Czech cabaret tradition and generates a legendary Liberated Theatre, whose influence is interrupted second World War II.

After the war, has no direct recovery of Prague cabaret, but rather it theatrically follows (Pinwheel, Rococo, Alhambra Theatre, satire, ABC Theatre and the small theater – Reduta, screens, Semaphore, Theatre on the Balustrade, etc.). The incoming communist regime ceases to be comfortable satirical sting cabaret productions and tries to transform into a harmless show.

historieIn this time of standardization within the nostalgic wave after the “good old days”, in which bore a distinctive Prague Old Prague cabaret in the form of “musical-beer variety”, opens in the traditional brewery and restaurant U Fleku cabaret. During the 70th and 80 20th century Cabaret U Fleku becoming a household name that everyone knows perhaps Bohemia.
